Ben O'Connor is looking in tremendous form ahead of the Tour de France, and as was the case last year he finds himself in the running for the podium of the Criterium du Dauphiné. He was no match to Jonas Vingegaard on the day, but defended himself against his direct rivals.
The Australian started the day in second place, and was alive to the action when Vingegaard made his move. No-one was on a level to respond, but Adam Yates did get a gap over the rest of the chasing group. O'Connor and Jai Hindley pushed the pace there mostly, then individually escaping it in the final kilometers. The AG2R rider lost his second place to Yates, but a furious chase saw him maintain third spot.
"It went pretty well. I didn't have my best legs, but what Jonas did was impressive. I tried to 'play' a bit on the Croix de Fer and lost some time to Jai Hindley, but I also had to try to get rid of other riders, which I managed," he explained. "At the end of the I'm still in the running for the podium. Since the beginning of the week, I have felt good and confident."
He enters the difficult final day of the race 2:24 behind the race leader but in his direct fight he finds himself 13 seconds behind Yates and 12 seconds in front of Hindley on what will be a tight battle for the podium.
