Racing outside of their home country,
Cofidis are bringing a surprisingly strong lineup to the
Giro d'Italia as they look to evade the pressure at the Tour de France, and also take in points to secure their maintenance at World Tour level.
The team will be led by
Guillaume Martin who will be making his debut in the Italian Grand Tour. “The objective will be to achieve a good, even a very good result in the general classification. I hope to do better than my best performance in a Grand Tour (8th)... Admittedly, I only had one day of racing before the Giro (Liège-Bastogne-Liège) so it will be a bit of an unknown... This is a race that is very suitable for climbers and should be suitable for me too," he said in a press release. Having finished in the Top10 of both the Tour de France and Vuelta a España last year, he's looking to keep the streak going in Italy.
Martin will finding a suiting route, with little time-trialing kilometers and an extensive list of high mountain stages. He will be supported by his right-hand man
Pierre-Luc Périchon, and three other riders who are likely to be eyeing stage wins throughout the three weeks aswell in
Anthony Perez,
Rémy Rochas and
Davide Villella.
But the team will also be eyeing the sprints with a lot of focus. Taking into consideration the results in the ongoing season, it is likely to see the team working towards the ambitions of
Simone Consonni in the flat stages, however
Davide Cimolai can also be a wildcard in the bunch finishes.
Wesley Kreder will both act as lead-out man, but also in protection of Martin in the flat stages and concludes the French team's lineup.
