Geraint Thomas had hinted at it, but as
INEOS Grenadiers team up for the first time in Mallorca for a pre-season training camp, the decision has been made for the former Tour de France champion to take on the
Giro d'Italia.
There were little doubts on the decision. Thomas bounced back this year to tremendous form, winning the Tour de Suisse and following that up with a third place at the Tour de France, where he once again found himself at the lead of the British team after several difficult years. His return to the Tour however, on what may be his final season as a pro, was unlikely following the route reveal, suited to the pure climbers.
Thomas hence was since the very start pointed towards the Giro d'Italia where there will be around 70 kilometers of individual time-trials, most of them very well suited to the Briton. At the Tour de France there will only be 22 and those are on vastly mountainous terrain where he would be unlikely to benefit from.
Thomas has ridden the Giro four times in his career, however abandoning in both 2017 and 2020 where he had prepared to fight for the pink jersey. He will be looking to turn his luck around, and will join the likes of Remco Evenepoel, João Almeida, Aleksandr Vlasov, Jack Haig and Damiano Caruso.
