Although Soudal - Quick-Step have had something of a lacklustre Classics season in 2024, Mauri Vansevenant's 4th place at the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday was definitely a bright spot.
At La Fleche Wallonne later this after, it's likely to again be Vansevenant who holds the Wolfpack's chances of success. “I was very surprised, because I didn't know what my condition would be like," he reflects of his performance last Sunday, in his pre-La Fleche Wallonne interview. "This gives a great feeling, of course. I have been riding all year round with good basic fitness."
Three times, Vansevenant has performed at La Fleche Wallonne, his best result coming back in 2021 with a 27th-placed finish. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old is delighted to back at one of his favourite races.
"For me it is always special to come back here. The first time I rode here, I was already very close," he explains. "The Mur de Huy is a tough assignment, you need the right legs to make a difference here. Normally the effort is a little too short for me, but I will definitely try.”
