Matteo Jorgenson came as a big contender for the overall classification at the Criterium du Dauphiné however after a modest performance in the time-trial the ambitions are now much lower. The American is suffering from the aftermath of two falls on stage 2.
"I didn't feel so good. The osteopath treated me last night to loosen the back and hips. However, I just didn't have the power to do a good time trial today," Jorgenson told CyclingPro.net after the stage. "I also slept badly. I couldn't follow the pacing plan. The pacing plan we had drawn up was realistic. It is based on what I performed in the past. It's a waste. Yesterday I fell twice, it's unbelievable."
Jorgenson was a favourite for the day, but ended a modest 18th place, 1:37 minutes behind Mikkel Bjerg, and 1:25 down on Jonas Vingegaard. He's also lost time on several riders who he was expected to take a lot of time on today, which would on paper put him among the best entering the mountainous stages of the race.
Although he's taken time on his teammate Enric Mas, he believes that he doesn't have the legs to chase his own result and will put his efforts into supporting the Spaniard. "I think I can recover enough to assist Enric. Today I was able to put some power on the pedals, at least enough to help the team and to finish the race in a good way," he concluded.
