Stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné had long been highlighted as the point of the race in which the general classification battle would light up. The favourite for the stage win was Jonas Vingegaard and although he narrowly missed that, he did put time into all his GC rivals.
“Mikkel rode a very good time trial. I did that too, but yes… He was very impressive,” said the leader of the Jumbo-Visma team in reference to the eventual stage winner, Vingegaard's compatriot, Mikkel Bjerg. Bjerg now also takes the overall lead of the race. “Hopefully I can take the yellow one of the next few days."
“The plan was to start hard. Maybe I started a little too fast. In the middle part I tried to save myself a bit to fill up again in the last part," explains Vingegaard who was 20 seconds quicker than Bjerg at the first time check, only to finish 12 seconds behind the UAE Team Emirates rider. "Only when I wanted to do that there was nothing left in the tank to fill up. Maybe I should have slowed down a bit at the start. Then I might have had a little more about it.”
