Carlos Verona criticizes La Vuelta organizers over racing in extreme heat: "There are people who are supposed to look out for us and our safety"

Carlos Verona is one of Mattias Skjelmose's main domestiques at this Vuelta a España and although he knows perfectly the temperatures that can hit the peloton in his home country, he has called for action against racing in conditions such as last weeks'.

The former Movistar Team rider spoke to Marca about the extreme heat suffered by the cyclists in the first week in Portugal, Extremadura and Andaluzia and asked for a change either in the route or in the dates of the Spanish Grand Tour:

"There are people who are supposed to look out for us and our safety. I think personally the heat is a dangerous thing. In La Vuelta we have been a little bit at the limit and we have to rethink collectively what measures can be taken. Vuelta a España in August, that's the way it is. We have to think about it".

Asked who he sees as the favorite to win the race, he hopes that if it's not his teammate Skjelmose who can win the race, it will be his former teammate Enric Mas who does, as he is seeing him doing very well. He doesn't see Mikel Landa doing badly either:

"I think Enric is the same or better than ever and hopefully, if it's not Skjelmose who wins La Vuelta, it will be Enric and Movistar because I think they deserve it and it would be a way for them to finish this Tour. If not Landa, who at 35 years old is still going strong. Hopefully they'll both be on the podium".
