Medical Report and withdrawals Vuelta a Espana 2024 | Update stage 21 - Brandon McNulty crashes in the final time-trial

Throughout the 2024 Vuelta a España there will be many riders to withdraw from the race, for several different reasons. We make a list of all riders who leave the Spanish Grand Tour as well as list out a few of the main crashes and health issues that take place during the race.

Stage 1 

Nothing to note.

Stage 2

Dylan van Baarle crashed and was the first rider to abandon the race, with injuries to the elbow and stomach. Rainer Kepplinger was also involved in the same crash. Mathias Vacek crashed on the final climb as a result of a 'drunk fan' according to himself.

In the final kilometers there was a mass crash involving some important riders. Joshua Tarling, Jhonatan Narváez, Victor Campenaerts, Chris Hamilton, Max Poole, Oscar Riesebeek, Kim Heiduk and Jasha Sutterlin were all affected by it - but at the being, none abandoned.

Stage 3

Nothing to note.

Stage 4

Thymen Arensman, Laurens de Plus, Óscar Rodríguez, Alessandro De Marchi and Carlos Canal suffered a crash early in the day but all continued the race despite injuries.

Stage 5

Rui Costa and Owain Doull crashed in the finale of stage 5, in an otherwise calm day. The Briton was injured but finished the stage whilst Costa was forced to abandon despite initially looking like he had a less harsh fall.

Stage 6

Adam Yates, Marco Frigo, Pelayo Sánchez, Lorenzo Fortunato and Welay Hagos Berhe have crashed during the stage but have not suffered major injuries. Jon Aberasturi, Rigoberto Urán and Kenny Elissonde abandoned the race during the day.

Stage 7

The stage started with two less riders, as Andreas Kron (concussion) and Damiano Caruso were suffering from injuries suffered in the previous day. Kaden Groves and Edward Planckaert, both of Alpecin-Deceuninck. Thymen Arensman reportedly suffered from heat stroke and was taken to the hospital after the stage.

Stage 8

The race's own medical race report indicates that the crash suffered by Giulio Ciccone and Txomin Juaristi was caused by a deer crossing the road. Wout van Aert crashed earlier in the day and Aleksandr Vlasov fell already inside the final climb. Juri Hollmann and Lorenzo Rota also suffered crashes. Eurosport Portugal reported that João Almeida tested positive for Covid-19, but this is not confirmed at the time of writing.

Stage 9

João Almeida did not start the stage after it having been confirmed that he tested positive for Covid-19, and that he was not physically apt to continue the race. During the stage Joshua Tarling and Rainer Kepplinger abandoned the race due to crashes whilst white jersey Antonio Tiberi suffered from heat stroke and was pulled out of the race.

Stage 10

Harold Martín López and Laurens de Plus did not start the stage after testing positive for Covid-19; whilst Kobe Goossens withdrew as a result of injury and illness. Sylvain Moniquet, Jesús Herrada and Simone Petilli were victims of crashes during the stage itself. Giulio Ciccone abandoned as a result of his crash a few days ago.

Stage 11

Three more riders did not start today's stage. Lorenzo Rota of Intermarché - Wanty was struggling with injuries suffered in previous days, whilst Thymen Arensman and Patrick Konrad tested positive for Covid-19 and withdrew because of it.

During the stage Chris Harper withdrew whilst Richard Carapaz suffered a crash during the stage. It was reported that Isaac Del Toro tested positive for Covid-19 but this was not confirmed by UAE Team Emirates.

Stage 12

Lennert van Eetvelt did not start the stage, suffering from illness that took him out of GC contention. Kévin Geniets also abandoned during the stage ill. António Jesus Soto was stung by a bug and required medical assistance at the car.

Stage 13

Welay Hagos Berhe was ill and did not start the stage, whilst Cofidis' Jonathan Lastra also did not start for unspecified reasons. Arkéa's Michel Ries abandoned during the stage. During the stage UAE duo Brandon McNulty and Jay Vine were involved in a dramatic crash with the American suffering cuts to his face and arms after sliding down a roadside barrier and into vegetation.

Stage 14

Cofidis' Rubén Fernandez was the next victim of a Covid-19 infection and did not start today's stage. During the stage, the race reported Kern Pharma's Ibon Ruiz to have respiratory difficulties, but the Spaniard made it to the finish.

Stage 15

Cian Uijtdebroeks did not start today's stage after testing positive for Covid-19. The Belgian is only another victim of the outbreak that is ongoing in the peloton and raising concerns for more and more riders. Pelayo Sánchez of Movistar did not finish the stage, unable to continue after the injuries he's suffered from two crashes already in this race.

Stage 16

Intermarché's Tom Paquot and Jayco's Callum Scotson did not start today's stage. Rémy Rochas abandoned during the stage for Groupama alongside Wout van Aert. The Belgian crashed twice - once at the start of the stage and the other in the descent of Collada Llomena. He didn't suffer fractures but had lots of bruises and abrasions. Isaac Del Toro and Felix Engelhardt were also involved in his second crash; whilst Laurens Huys and Filippo Zana went down in the first fall.

Stage 17

Michael Woods and Sander de Pestel did not start today's stage.

Stage 18

Corbin Strong did not start today's stage in search of resting ahead of other races whilst Rein Taaramäe abandoned the race with illness.

Stage 19

Jay Vine and Jasha Sutterlin suffered crashes during the stage.

Stage 20

Txomin Juaristi of Euskaltel - Euskadi did not finish the stage and alongside him were three Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe riders. Daniel Martínez and Patrick Gamper did not complete the stage whilst Nico Denz arrived out of control after reports of food poisoning in the BORA camp.

Stage 21

Stage favourite Brandon McNulty was involved in a small crash on the final day of the race.
