Carlos Rodriguez is the Spanish cycling sensation in the
Tour de France 2023. The exhibitions of Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard keep him away from the media spotlight, but he is fifth in the general classification after the first two high mountain stages.
About the sixth stage, the
INEOS Grenadiers rider explains that the team worked at a high level and that he found himself with good legs despite not being able to keep up with the pace of the two great titans of cycling today. He rode through the finish alongside Jai Hindley and Simon Yates after having attacked the chasing group in the climb to Cauterets.
"I came here just to discover the race and keep learning and improving. There was an amazing job by the whole team. Vingegaard and Pogacar got away, but I was able to come in with the others and I had good legs. I believe in working and continuing to do my best."
Speaking to Marca, Rodríguez ruled out any kind of pressure. He assures that he has no fixed objective in the Grande Boucle and that he wants to go day by day to see how far he can go: "That's up to each one of us.... I'm calm. That's why I want to go day by day, without looking any further ahead."
On the fall that was caused by a spectator at the end of the fifth stage, he assured that he had no after-effects: "It was bad luck, I have no after-effects".
Finally, he wanted to highlight the support that his teammates are giving him and especially Egan Bernal, winner of the 2019 Tour, who is emptying himself for him in these first mountain stages, something that the Almerian, how could it be otherwise, is very grateful: "Everyone supports me, even Bernal. I have a lot to learn from him".
