Jumbo-Visma planned an attack today. Wout van Aert joined the breakaway and behind the rest of the team setup an attack. All pieces fell in place, however the plan was washed up by
Tadej Pogacar who had better legs on the day and took time on the Dane who is now the new race leader.
Wilco Kelderman and Sepp Kuss split the peloton and set up an attack of Vingegaard towards the summit of the Col du Tourmalet, with Tadej Pogacar following this time around, unlike the previous day where the difference between the two was significant. "Pogacar had the better legs. We already tried it on the Tourmalet, but I couldn't get it off. I liked that, I think it would have been perfect to ride through that valley with Wout. The team as a whole was great, so I really have to thank them."
"However, Tadej was better than we expected and I now know it will be another tough fight. I'm where I want to be at the moment, but anything can happen." The duo gained over two minutes on the rest of the competition, however in the final kilometers, after launching an attack, Pogacar counter-attacked and took 28 seconds in total from a day where Jumbo-Visma was much superior in terms of depth.
"I had hoped for a stage win, but Tadej was strong and deserved the stage victory. We wanted to test him again and see how he felt. I suppose he was better than before. I am very happy to have the yellow again. I love this color and the jersey, for me it is a very nice symbol in cycling," he concluded. He holds a gap of 25 seconds over his rival into stage 7 tomorrow, the race remains fully open as the riders leave the Pyrenees.
