Matteo Jorgenson won his second
Paris-Nice in a row despite not being the strongest in the mountains but the most consistent rider in the race. His consistency and versatility once again impressed
Bradley Wiggins who is not afraid to say the American can in the future win the Tour de France.
He got a big lead over his main rivals in the team time trial and then saw his teammate Jonas Vingegaard abandon the race due to injury. In the fifth stage, where Visma caused widespread echelons, he was attentive and confirmed his lead, which he was able to defend in Saturday's queen stage and in the always complicated final finish in Nice.
Sir Bradley Wiggins spoke about him on Lance Armstrong's The Move podcast saying he sees the American cyclist as a potential Tour de France winner and compares him to one of the best in history, one of only four to have won the Grande Boucle 5 times:
"Jorgenson is going to win the Tour de France one day, he has something that reminds me of some of the great cyclists, Miguel Induráin or someone like that, the way he fights or counter-races. Also the way he is off the bike, he's a normal guy, a great team leader."
We'll see what the American cyclist ends up achieving in his career. In his first year at Visma, he already surprised by winning the race to the sun, but at the Tour he played a domestique role for Jonas Vingegaard.
Jorgenson will certainly return to the Grand Boucle later this year, in the same role if the Dane is able to show his best level. However Jorgenson, second last year also at the Criterium du Dauphiné and now a two-time winner of Paris-Nice, can certainly aim for more than just a support role even in the biggest races in the world.
