Biniam Girmay had placed himself as a prime contender to win the African Cyclist of the Year award, and today that has been confirmed as he beat the competition after a breakthrough season.
Girmay did face strong competition however as Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux's Louis Meintjes stormed to a brilliant season including two wins, one of them being at the Vuelta a Espana, and a career-best 7th place at the Tour de France. The South African finished in second place, whilst Natnael Tesfatsion was voted the third best.
Girmay soared in popularity following his surprise win at Gent-Wevelgem, days after showing off his talent in the cobbled classics with a 5th place at the E3 Saxo Bank Classic. Later at the Giro d'Italia he continued his run of success, entering a rivalry with Mathieu van der Poel, which eventually saw him win the 10th stage - before abandoning due to a cork incident in the podium celebrations.
