Alejandro Valverde is set to retire from professional cycling in the coming weeks, a decision in the making for years, but one that the Spanish veteran has taken, which will see him finally step down from a controversial but wildly successful career.
Valverde has taken countless successes throughout his career including a win at the Vuelta a Espana, at the World Championships, aswell as a total of four Liége-Bastogne-Liège wins - and seven podiums combined throughout the monuments. His career will come to a close after Il Lombardia this coming October, the 42-year old revealed.
In a tribute post on Twitter, Movistar Team have also revealed which races will be the final of the Spaniard's career. Il Lombardia will be the final event, on the 8th of October where he will be a contender for the win, but he will also be racing at some of the other Italian Autumn Classics beforehand.
Valverde is scheduled to be at the start line of Coppa Agostini (29th September), Giro dell'Emilia (1st October) and Tre Valli Varesine (4th October), where he should be amongst the favourites for the hilly races aswell.
