“Visma made it clear... they won’t let me join the breakaway” - Uno-X rider blacklisted at Vuelta a Espana 2026

Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s control of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana began before the flag had even dropped on Stage 17.
Fredrik Dversnes revealed that members of the Dutch team approached him ahead of the start and warned that he would not be permitted to join the day’s breakaway. The Uno-X Mobility rider had already demonstrated why Visma considered him dangerous.
Earlier this season, Dversnes survived from the breakaway to win at the Giro d’Italia in Milan, overturning expectations of an almost certain bunch sprint.
With Matthew Brennan chasing a fifth Vuelta stage victory on the flat road into Seville, Visma were determined to prevent Dversnes from attempting the same trick again.

“It would be fantastic to repeat that, but Visma made it clear to me that they won’t let me join the breakaway, so unfortunately it will be difficult,” Dversnes told Eurosport before Stage 17.
Asked whether Visma riders had personally delivered that message before the stage, the Norwegian confirmed: “That’s what they told me.”
Dversnes accepted that being marked so closely by the most successful team at the race reflected his growing reputation as a breakaway threat. It did not make the situation any less frustrating. “It’s certainly a compliment. But it doesn’t make it any more enjoyable for me,” he said. “That’s cycling and tactics. You simply have to respect it.”

Dversnes tests Visma’s warning
Despite that conversation, Dversnes attacked as soon as Stage 17 began. He joined Enzo Paleni and Sinuhe Fernandez in the opening move, but soon stopped contributing and allowed himself to be reabsorbed by the peloton.
Paleni and Fernandez continued as a pair while Team Visma | Lease a Bike and Cofidis controlled their advantage. The gap briefly exceeded five minutes during a period of hesitation in the peloton, but the chase resumed well before the approach to Seville.
Fernandez was dropped with 15 kilometres remaining and Paleni continued alone until Uno-X Mobility brought the Frenchman back inside the final three kilometres.
Uno-X then attempted to convert that work into victory for Magnus Cort, who finished third behind Jordi Meeus and Brennan. Dversnes had been neutralised at the start of the stage and Visma completed the day with Brennan’s fifth victory of the Vuelta and the team’s seventh.
