Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado skipped racing two weeks ago due to illness and last week was not so good in Val di Sole, missing out on the win with a modest field. However, the Dutch rider returned to a very high level and took an impressive victory in Namur.
“I was still quite nervous before the start, but it went very well. I saw at the start that Puck [Pieterse] had chain problems and Lucinda was behind it. So I decided to move on," Alvarado said in a post-race interview. "I always wanted to win here. I've been trying for years and it's only the first time I've won here.” The Dutch rider led the World Cup coming into the race and had the goal of scoring as many points as possible. Against Lucinda Brand and Puck Pieterse it wouldn't be an easy task to go for the win, but she took to the front very early on and distances the rest of the field before her two strongest chasers could react.
“I didn't expect it after an exhausting week. I was not yet fit enough to contest a double weekend. But I felt very good today. After three laps I was at my limit. From that moment on it was important to fully climb the climbs and pace the remaining sections. I remained flawless on a technical level," she said. In a circuit where the descents were very technical, this earned her valuable time that allowed her to keep the winning gap. She led the race convincingly, whilst her compatriots battled furiously for second place.
The goal was achieved however. Not only did she take the win but also extended the lead over Lucinda Brand. She remains in a very good position to win the World Cup and has already ridden over half of the competition at this point. “Anything can still happen. In any case, I will have to keep fighting for the final victory until the end."
