Over the several ascents of the Piccolo Stelvio there were some moves and splits over the peloton, but many waited for the final ascent. With good reason, here Jumbo turned up the steam with Jan Tratnik, creating a group of nine riders including van Aert and Tiesj Benoot, Julian Alaphilippe alongside two Soudal - Quick-Step teammates, Marc Hirshci,
Vincenzo Albanese and Christian Scaroni.
The nine-rider group had a clear favourite however it saw good collaboration as all rider looked to distance the peloton. As the gap grew it became clear that the triumph was in front. Tiesj Benoot and Julian Alaphilippe launched attacks in the final kilometers but both teams with numerical superiority covered each other.
There was little that could be done for the competition. Tiesj Benoot led out the sprint and the Belgian was the fastest towards the line. He beat Vincenzo Albanese and
Andrea Bagioli, the two Italians completed the podium.
