Wout van Aert surprised everyone by sprinting to second place behind Jonathan Milan in Stage 8, despite insisting before the stage that he had no intention of contesting the finish.
Asked about the change of plans, the Visma rider responded with his usual dry humor. When a reporter asked, “Before the race, you said you weren't going to sprint—when did you decide?” Van Aert replied, “I had already decided before the race. But next time I'll put it on Twitter.”
He followed through. This morning, Van Aert posted exactly that on his X account: “Today I'm going to sprint.”
Whether it was a playful jab at the media or a real signal of intent, it looks like Van Aert is once again aiming for a stage win. Milan, who powered away to take Stage 8, will remain the man to beat, while Tim Merlier, already a winner in this year’s Tour, adds another serious challenge.
