Wilco Kelderman has returned to racing this weekend after a long period of recovery and altitude training, and he's showing good signs for the final part of the season where he'll have an important role for the team's goal in the upcoming mountainous races.
In Saturday's Clasica San Sebastian he crossed the line in a modest 36th day, however the following day he showed a different set of legs. He finished the Circuito de Getxo in third place, only beat by Juan Ayuso and Andrea Piccolo in the final sprint. "It was a really controlled race until the two main climbs of the day. I felt good and so I attacked on the penultimate climb together with A. Piccolo," he explained.
"Over the final few kilometres I had to deal with cramps, but I tried to launch my sprint from the front and go for the win," that sprint earned him a place on the podium, however the Dutchman looks on positively after a weekend of intensity in the legs, revealing a good path towards the Vuelta a Espana where he'll be playing a crucial yet open role for BORA - hansgrohe alongside Jai Hindley and Sergio Higuita.
"In the end I think it was a good race, and I was already feeling much better than yesterday. I just returned to racing after a long training period, I think I’m on a good path towards my next goals," Kelderman concluded. He'll be at the startline tomorrow for the Vuelta a Burgos, likely as the final racing step in preparation for the final Grand Tour of the season.
