Team Visma | Lease a Bike almost went down fully at today's stage of the Vuelta a Espana but although the consequences weren't big and the team could even celebrate a victory with Jonas Vingegaard, not everyone had a positive day. Axel Zingle was the worst affected out of the fall and dislocated his shoulder, and if that wasn't enough he then had his bike stolen from a fan.
It's hard to think of a crazier scenario in a pro race. After the crash, the Frenchman stayed on site for several minutes whilst TV footage showed him in pain. As he walked towards an ambulance, an abandon seemed clear. However seconds later Zingle would walk out and back onto the road. We now know that he dislocated his shoulder.
It's unclear whether it was in that moment or later on in the stage, but crossing the line, Zingle shared what happened in the finale of todat's stage with Eurosport. "I dislocated my shoulder again while grabbing a gel," he said, perhaps indicating that this happened in an instance after the mass crash that affected the team.
Either ways Zingle, already badly hurt from the fall, still had to contend with his bike being outright taken away by a member of the crowd. "I gave my bike to a guy who didn't speak much English while I got into the ambulance to put my shoulder back in place. When I got out, the bike was gone".
