Jonas Vingegaard was one of the several riders who punctured last Saturday's in the team time-trial. The Dane limited the losses as
Jumbo-Visma waited for him, but has shed unexpected time on the opening day.
“I think we can be happy with how it went, even considering that I punctured. My teammates had to wait for me, so losing just 32 seconds isn't bad if we think about how things went," Vingegaard told SpazioCiclismo. "For this we can be satisfied. We have never done a stage like this, we have to admit that there weren't the ideal conditions to do it".
The dark conditions, heavy rain and slick roads proved a nightmare for the Dutch team who were the big favourites to win on the day. That turned into a day of survival, despite the difficult conditions it was a puncture that ruled the Dane out.
That sparked quite a lot of confusion in the Dutch team halfway through their effort, but the scenes of the bike change were only revealed by fan footage. It was a quick one, but in such a short effort there was nothing Jumbo-Visma could do to get back on path to fight for a strong result. Vingegaard and Roglic lost 26 seconds on Remco Evenepoel.
