The Vuelta a Espana is the last of the three grand tours. A route for the first two stages of the 78th edition of the race, as well as the official start point, was recently revealed by race organizers.
August 26 will be the departure date for the race in Barcelona. It is the city's second time hosting the race. The last time was in 1962. Team time trials and mid-mountain stages are included in the first two stages.
Team time trials are held over a course measuring 14.6 kilometers in length. Olympic Port will be the starting point. The second stage will be held in Mataró. A 181 kilometres route will likely be decided on the iconic Montjuic climb before the finish at the Olympic stadium.
Jaume Collboni, Deputy Mayor of the City, is delighted to host the departure of such an important race. “Barcelona is a city that loves sport, especially cycling. That La Vuelta returns to Barcelona after 60 years is great news. The celebration of La Vuelta 23 will also be an opportunity to once again show the world the cultural, social and artistic wealth of our city. We want people to leave their homes to enjoy this great cycling festival, to participate in the passion and spirit of this great sporting event,” concluded Collboni.
