Team BikeExchange - Jayco have had a mixed day as Simon Yates lost time due to a late crash, however they managed to take the stage win as
Kaden Groves took his first World Tour win with a fast sprint in the crosswind-swept stage at the
Volta a Catalunya.
The breakaway consisted of Adrià Moreno (Burgos-BH),
Jonas Iversby (Team DSM) and Joan Bou (Euskaltel - Euskadi). The trio never threatened the stage win as the peloton easily controlled the gap, with the riders being reeled in with 30 kilometers to go.
Richie Porte abandoned during the stage, and the likes of Simon Yates, Marc Soler, Mattias Skjelmose and Carlos Rodríguez also had mistimed mishaps which caused a lot of stress, as the strong winds had the peloton very tense, with several crashes in the final hour of racing.
In the last 20 kilometers, as two crashes split the peloton, the gaps stayed consistent as the peloton accelerated in the crosswinds. There were very few leadouts towards the end, mainly with the GC teams making sure their leaders stay safe, but in the end the two BikeExchange riders that stayed in front made it work.
Michael Matthews leadout the sprint,
Phil Bauhaus was the first to launch and it seemed like he was heading for the win but Kaden Groves jumped from his wheel in the final meters and managed to take the win by a very thin margin.
Despite gathering both wins, the lead has escaped the team's hands. DSM's Jonas Iversby has gathered bonifications from both stages so far from the breakaways, and after resisting the crosswind action he is now the new race leader.
