Stage 16 of the 2024
Giro d'Italia is one that will be remembered for a long time, not just for the on-bike drama either as the bad weather saw the riders' union CPA go to war with race organisers RCS prior the stage getting underway.
Despite a resolution finally eventually being reached, with the Umbrailpass completely the cut from the day and riders instead only riding the final 120ish kilometres, riders across the peloton were still left totally unimpressed by the actions and decision-making of race organiser RCS and the cycling's governing body, the UCI, with the likes of
Ben O'Connor and
Simon Geschke among others voicing their discontent.
Once the racing began however, as has been the case throughout the 2024 Giro d'Italia,
Tadej Pogacar was the star of the show, taking the stage win, his fifth of the race up to this point. Behind, there were mixed results for the rest of the general classification hopefuls as
Geraint Thomas lost significant time, dropping to 3rd overall and despite
Movistar Team doing the majority of the work on the front throughout the day,
Einer Rubio was unable to do anything notable on the final climb.
