In a brutal finale to stage 16 at the 2024 Giro d'Italia, Bahrain - Victorious' Antonio Tiberi recovered from a slow reaction to the GC attacks to keep his 5th place overall and actually increase his lead in the Best Young Riders classification.
"I didn't feel very good at the start of the stage. On the last climb, I made it through again, so that was nice," assessed the 22-year-old Italian, who is now 10:09 down on the Maglia Rosa of Tadej Pogacar, but leads nearest rival Thymen Arensman by 24 seconds in the fight for the White Jersey, in his post-stage interview.
Once the attacks began from the general classification group, as mentioned Tiberi initially looked in difficulty as he saw his rivals race off ahead. Showing maturity that belies his youth however, the Italian kept his cool, didn't go over the limit and slowly but surely began to reel in rider after rider and eventually finished the stage in 5th, 33 seconds down on Pogacar.
"When Tadej placed his attack, I saw Arensman drive away very quickly. However, I decided to go at my own pace so I didn't have to put in any extra effort," Tiberi details of the climb towards the finish line. "In the end, I managed to ride slowly, slowly towards him, and then power at full speed in the last 500 meters and thus gain a few extra seconds of time."
Pre-stage though, there was considerable drama as, given the torrential rain and snow at the startline, riders pleaded for an amended stage. After an intense discussion between the CPA and RCS, eventually an agreement was reached to only ride the final 120km. "There was a lot of uncertainty, so we didn't know exactly what was going to happen," Tiberi recalls. "It went from one thing to another, but in the end they made the right decision to move the start.''
