Aurélien Paret-Peintre may have won the battle, outsprinting Andreas Leknessund for the stage win but it was the Team DSM man who won the war as he rode into the overall lead of the Giro d'Italia.
With Leknessund knowing the Maglia Rosa was hanging in the balance, the 23-year-old Norwegian attacked on the final climb of the day with only Paret-Peintre being able to hold the wheel. In the final kilometre however, it was the Frenchman who proved to have the most left in the tank.
