Tour de Pologne: Gerben Thijssen wins stage two in thrilling bunch sprint

The second stage of the Tour de Pologne saw another bunch sprint, one where the main favourites once again failed to take the win, as Gerben Thijssen rode to the best win of his career for Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux.

Four riders went up the road once again, with Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team) and Patryck Stosz (Poland National Team) searching more bonus seconds in pursuit of the leader's jersey, Stosz' teammate Piotr Brozyna and Jasper De Buyst (Lotto Soudal) completing the group.

The group worked well together, but with an easy day on the road and a peloton full of sprinters they were never going to have a serious chance of fighting for the win. De Buyst was the strongest out of the four, going solo with 23 kilometers to go, and only caught with a few kilometers to go in what was an impressive effort.

There were a few nervous moments and tumbles in the final kilometers, but a bunch sprint was set in Zamosc. The final meters saw confusion in the leadout, with Roger Kluge trying to surprise early, but was caught inside the final meters after a strong effort.

It was a tight finale, but Gerben Thijssen carried the most speed over the final meters and took the biggest win of his career. He beat Pascal Ackermann and Jonathan Milan in the final meters. Jonas Abrahamsen is the new leader of the race after the bonifications he took during the day in the breakaway.
