Tom Pidcock is starting his road season at the
Volta ao Algarve and showing decent form. He hopes to warm-up towards a very busy spring which he will be using in preparation for the Tour de France and the Olympic Games.
"I think it's difficult to say. We'll see later but to be honest answer is that I'm in better shape than last year but we'll see," Pidcock told Cyclingpro.net this morning. "Dani [Martínez] is certainly going very well, Remco [Evenepoel] is here. I don't know how Wout [Van Aert] will be in this climb, so yeah I think competition is higher level."
Last year Pidcock won at the Alto do Malhão, where the riders finish today. He then lost the yellow jersey at the time-trial, but this year he will look to win on the final day of the race - he starts 10th in the overall classification. After Algarve he races Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milano-Sanremo, Itzulia Basque Country and the Ardennes.
"To focus more specifically on the races that I have the best chance of winning, I can put all my eggs in one basket. The Tour I wanna make a bit of a bigger impression than last year and to do that I need to prepare better because I also want to come out well," he tells.
A packed schedule on and off-road, despite all this his biggest goal continues to be outside road cycling: "My biggest personal focus is the Olympics for Mountain Bike, that means if I want to come out of the Tour in a good place I need to go in in a good place."
