In 2019, Chris Froome crashed whilst doing a recon of the Criterium du Dauphiné time-trial after being blown out by a gust of wind. INEOS Grenadiers were awaken to that possibility as the exact same happened to Tom Pidcock at Itzulia Basque Country, but the Briton has luckily avoided major injuries,
“I would like to thank everyone for the messages. Unfortunately I couldn't start in the Tour of the Basque Country after a fall during reconnaissance. I was surprised by a gust of wind," Pidcock said in a message shared on social media.“Scans have not revealed any fractures, but we will have to wait and see in the coming days. I don't feel so good right now.”
Pidcock was a contender for the overall classification in the Basque Country, but was also looking to build form towards the Ardennes classics. The race began with a technical and hilly time-trial in Irun, which was ultimately won by Primoz Roglic. Pidcock did not take to the start after crashing in the recon.
Worrying footage came out of the INEOS area, as Pidcock was seeing being carried away from the team bus, not being able to do it on his own feet. The worst was avoided, but it is unclear when he will resume competition. “It was hit hard. I can hardly lean on it now. I am now going home, where I will focus on my recovery," he concluded.
