Alpecin-Fenix continue their winning ways in the sprints as
Tim Merlier takes his first win of the season in
Tirreno-Adriatico's first bunch sprint, in a stage that saw several attacks and a furious sprint finish.
Davide Gabburo and Johnatan Cañaveral (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè), Umberto Marengo (Drone Hopper - Androni Giocatolli), Davide Bais and Francesco Gavazzi (EOLO-Kometa) set off for the breakaway early on to represent the Italian Pro Teams that got invited to the race. The two EOLO riders set off from the group in the final hills of the stage, and were caught with just under 20 kilometers to go as Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) attacked in the peloton on the final hilltop at the same time, after Tadej Pogacar sprinted for a one bonus second in Chiusdino.
The UAE rider forced the peloton to have a strong pace as he grew a gap of 35 seconds and then kept the pace strong, making for a hard catch that only took place with three kilometers to go. Several teams battled for prime position in the final kilometer, with Quick-Step managing to put Davide Ballerini into prime position for the end. The final sprint was very dangerous with a slight bend, Peter Sagan was the first to launch but Tim Merlier easily went past and then managed to take a dominant win.
Olav Kooij stormed into second place with a brilliant sprint started outside position, with
Kaden Groves finishing third. Filippo Ganna keeps the lead of the race.
