Óscar Freire, the three-time world champion who rose to prominence with Rabobank and became one of the most successful riders of his era, was arrested on Sunday in Cantabria following a domestic abuse complaint filed by his wife.
The case, first reported by El Mundo, centres on allegations that go far beyond isolated incidents. The complaint describes a prolonged pattern of threats, humiliation and what is characterised as “continuous harassment”, said to have broken down the relationship in recent years. The arrest came after Freire’s wife attended the Guardia Civil station in Torrelavega to request legal protection, describing her situation as untenable.
According to the police report, her testimony outlines a relationship dynamic that allegedly shifted significantly from 2023 onwards, after more than two decades of marriage.
While she claims there had always been elements of possessive behaviour, she alleges this escalated into systematic monitoring and control.

Allegations of surveillance and escalating control

In her statement, Freire is accused of installing hidden microphones in the family home and in her vehicle, as well as using GPS tracking devices to monitor her movements. She also alleges that he duplicated her WhatsApp account to access private conversations, describing a situation in which control over her daily life became absolute.
She told officers that she had normalised this behaviour for a long period, stating that he had “always been very controlling” throughout the relationship.
The complaint also details the emotional impact of this alleged behaviour. She described feeling “inferior and very submissive”, citing repeated humiliation related to her financial situation and physical appearance. The home environment, where the couple’s three children live, is described as having become increasingly volatile, with what she called “many violent arguments”.

Divorce, threats and reported incidents

Freire’s wife is currently in the process of a divorce and has not lived with him since the end of 2025. She alleges that threats to leave her without financial support and to take their children were a recurring feature of arguments.
One of the most serious incidents described in the report dates back to September 2025. According to her account, Freire allegedly took her mobile phone by force as she attempted to contact his brother for help, smashing it on the ground. She further claims that when she threatened to call the police, he grabbed her by both arms and pushed her against the front door. She was able to break free and leave the house.
Another alleged incident took place during the night at their residence in Mijares, where he is said to have damaged furniture and torn her image from a family canvas before throwing it at her.

Claims of a “parallel life”

The complaint also refers to what is described as a “parallel life” over the past two years. She alleges that Freire maintained relationships with other women and did not attempt to hide them, instead using the situation to undermine her self-esteem with degrading remarks.
Her testimony also includes allegations of sexual coercion, stating that she felt pressured into certain practices and into maintaining daily relations out of fear of repercussions or to avoid further conflict.

Public incident leads to arrest

The immediate trigger for the arrest is said to have taken place on Sunday, 12 April, during a mass at the church of Puente San Miguel. According to her account, Freire entered the church and sat next to her despite her attempts to keep a distance.
She alleges that as a new argument began, she tried to leave, but he grabbed her arm to prevent her from doing so. Outside the church, and in front of witnesses, she claims he again took her phone to stop her from making a call.
She then went to the Guardia Civil at 14:00, fearing for her safety after what she described as ongoing harassment. The report notes that Freire made 13 missed calls to her phone while she was giving her statement.
Freire was arrested at around 19:00 on Sunday. After being informed of his rights, he chose not to make a statement. On Monday, the case moved to the Court of First Instance in Torrelavega, where fast-track proceedings were initiated.

Case now in judicial hands

Freire’s wife has since appeared in court with her lawyer to formally ratify her complaint, in a case that has sent shockwaves through Spanish cycling.
There had already been a previous incident on 5 February last year, when Freire’s disappearance was reported following a family argument. He later reappeared in good health after leaving his belongings and documentation at home.
The seriousness of the allegations, including claims of threats to leave her “without a penny” and make her life “impossible”, places the former world champion in a complex legal situation.
As proceedings continue, the case now rests with the court, which will determine any precautionary measures and the next steps, while the sport looks on at a situation that could have significant personal and professional consequences if the allegations are upheld.
