Thibau Nys has perfectly and successfully adapted from a cyclocross specialist to a rider who can win just as much on the road, yesterday he took the biggest win of his career on the road as he beat serious World Tour competition at the GP des Kantons Aargau.
“It’s unbelievable. If you had told me before the season I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m fully aware that it will go with ups and downs in the future but I can only enjoy from the moments we have right now," Nys said in a press release. "I’m really grateful for the opportunities that the Team gave me and I’m happy to finish it off already for the second time this year. It’s like living on a cloud and I hope I can keep it going."
The Belgian, son of CX legend Sven Nys, has joined the elite Trek - Segafredo this year and has already kicked off his winning ways at the Tour of Norway where he won an uphill sprint with exceptional dominance. Here he has repeated his feat, surviving the longer climbs the race had to offer in order to be in contention, and then outsprinting Marc Hirschi and Pello Bilbao for victory.
“We had a really strong team with different options in the final. Quinn didn’t have the day he hoped for but on another day he could have done a strong attack in the last lap. Also Baro (Filippo Baroncini, ed.) had the opportunity," he continues. "We came with a plan that could have gone a lot of different ways, but in the end I felt really good and I told the Team I would try to survive over the last climb and that if it came to a sprint and they placed me in a good position then I had a good chance of winning."
"I felt really confident going into the sprint. I told Baro to go third or fourth into the last corner and then sprint all out, and then I could finish it off. It was like something out of a book, everything went perfectly in the last kilometer. Also, Tony did a perfect job to get us in the best position in the last 500 meters," he concludes. "Baro launched the sprint and with 200 to go I was in the wheel and already felt like I would win. It feels amazing!”
With the Baloise Belgium Tour near, the 20-year old will certainly be aiming for a third win in the space of a month, whilst the national championships could provide an opportunity for him to be aiming for the elite stripes for the first time.
