After Del Toro's reluctance to work on the Finestre itself,
Richard Carapaz who spent an hour attacking and trying to drop his rival - unsuccessfully - refused to work. In part, winning the GC would be virtually impossible as he needed to gain back time on Del Toro. But the Mexican's hesitation was the unexpected choice, as at worst, he could potentially lose his second place to Carapaz but would give himself a chance to defend the Giro lead.
None opted to work, and resigned for the minor podium places. That benefited Simon Yates, a rider who was already competing at the top level in the years where Contador was finishing his career.
"He was very close to getting it in 2018 and look he has been able to make up for it in the same climb, in a stage in which in principle he was not the big favorite, in that Colle delle Finestre and this great trophy has his name engraved on it," the Spaniard concluded.
