Richard Carapaz came out of stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia very annoyed at the tactics deployed by Isaac del Toro during the Colle delle Finestre. He then decided not to work after the climb, which ultimately led to both having a stalemate and losing their positions to Simon Yates of Visma.
"Happy with the work done throughout the Giro, we leave with the feeling of having been present throughout the Giro as a team and I think that from the first day we started the words were those, try to try and try to win, I think we leave with a very nice third place and, nothing, enjoying."
Carapaz place in the final podium is ultimately a surprise taking into consideration the expectations at the beginning of the race, and with an EF Education-EasyPost that looked more focused on stage wins.
The American team achieved two and then went on a full-out pursuit for the pink jersey. On Finestre they managed to isolate Isaac del Toro right away, but then in the head-to-head Carapaz didn't have the legs to drop his rival.
After the finish he was quite visibly upset at Del Toro. About what happened on Saturday, he didn't want to double down on the statements, and admits he should've worked with Del Toro after the climb.
"Yesterday was a game of chess won by the smartest. For me, even to a certain extent I had a responsibility, but it was to have shared but, well, that's all. I am happy with what I have done and I leave with that".
