After much debate and deliberation on social media, on TV and within the team itself, it seems as if
Jumbo-Visma have finally decided on
Sepp Kuss as the man to lead their team into Madrid as winner of the
Vuelta a Espana.
Despite the victory staying within the team being the most important thing, for
Jonas Vingegaard and
Primoz Roglic there must be a tinge of disappointment as Jumbo-Vimsa sports director
Marc Reef admits. "Of course it is difficult for those two, because they both came to the Vuelta with the intention of winning the classification," he explains to Eurosport.
On stage 18, there was a noticeable lack of attacks from Roglic and Vingegaard with a cease-fire having been called within the team. "After what Sepp has already done for them, they showed on the road that they more or less paid back all that work," says Reef. "We ended up in this situation, we are proud of it and we worked hard for it. The whole team is very strong here."
"We have fought so hard for that in recent days. Our intention was to create a gap, now we have that desired difference. The race still has to be ridden, but those three can show how they want to ride the race now," concludes Reef. "We will see on Saturday how the race unfolds. If our intention and the feeling among the riders remains the same, Kuss can still be the leader. However, the race still has to be ridden and we are not going to reveal what our race tactics will be on Saturday."
