Ion Izagirre is in top form for the Itzulia Basque Country after winning the GP Miguel Indurain last Saturday. The Basque rider of the Cofidis team doesn't hide from his teammates as he ambitions more success this week.
In an interview with Marca newspaper, he said that he is in great shape and that the race in his homeland suits his characteristics because it's a course that isn't so hard. "The route is not so hard because there are not so many climbs or time trials. It's all very open. They are like daily classics where you have to be very attentive. Apart from the final stage in Eibar, with Arrate, which is very hard, anything can happen in the rest, with those ups and downs, the narrow roads... If you look at the list of winners in recent years you can get an idea of the level there is".
Of course, he is aware of the great rivalry that exists in the race due to the high level of the participants, but he does not rule out a repeat victory as in 2019: "I'm comfortable and happy. We all know each other. We have arrived with the intention of facing the race with motivation and guarantees. A priori, there are many favorites like Vingegaard or Gaudu, Landa, Mas or Higuita, but I know I can win this race again".
Finally, he talks about his goals for the season and what he thinks could happen in the Tour between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard: "The idea in principle is to go to the Tour and then, maybe, to be in La Vuelta. Maybe Tadej is shining a bit more now because he's been at his best since the beginning of the year, but Vingegaard will go little by little".
