Primoz Roglic will return to the Tour de France once again in the coming month, and he has stated that winning is the clear and main goal for the team. Whilst he isn't the only option for Jumbo-Visma, Roglic's three Vuelta a España consecutive wins see him at a level only a few can reach, but he's hoping to turn that quality into a big win this summer.
“It is a race that I haven’t won yet. I would love to win it. But I don't look at it like I have really bad memories about it. It's just some experiences that happened. Mostly it's incredible, like the way I won in 2017," he recalled, the day where he won his first stage in the Tour de France before becoming a contender for it's win.
“In cycling you're going to have a lot of different kinds of goals because there are just a crazy amount of races," he told Eurosport Cycling Show, "but the Tour is definitely the biggest one, or one of the biggest ones. It depends for each individual. But for me, it’s a big goal to go there, do my best and try to win it.”
“For me, I’m just trying to figure out how to get the best out of myself – how to prepare myself in the best way and how to function in the race the best way. I know the way and we will do it now in one month," the Slovenian added. He followed a traditional approach with a three-week altitude camp at Sierra Nevada in May, followed by a return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné where he took the overall win. The Tour block is now going to altitude for another - smaller - block in Tignes, before traveling to Denmark for the Grand Depart.
He also talked about his friendly rivalry with compatriot Tadej Pogacar who he will face the coming month: "Is pushing each other to be better. And definitely it's also something special for all the spectators and everyone around it. About his teammates Jonas Vingegaard who will co-lead the team with him, Roglic certifies that it's a weapon for the Dutch team: "Super strong rider and with him, we are also stronger as a team".
The team will also have Wout van Aert who will have extra focus on the green jersey, but his work will also pass through supporting his leaders. “He's a super nice guy. Wout can do everything. All kinds of things. He doesn't need to prove anything. I always say he’s one guy, but in that one guy is two or three guys," he said regarding the Belgian champion. “He can do so many different things. On the other hand, all the guys around me are there for a reason. They are the best ones. Everyone has his own tasks, his own missions so go there, enjoy it and have fun.”
