The first week of racing at the 2023 Tour de France has flown by. For Jonas Vingegaard the situation looks pretty rosy, leading the race and as he says himself, with the best still to come.
Stage 7 was not a day for the general classification riders, but it was an intensely hot day. The heat isn't something that bothers Vingegaard though. "It has been quite an easy stage, with only one man going in the breakaway. It has been a bit long, but I’m happy with the heat. I like the heat," he explains. "In last year’s stages, my best stages were the warmest ones. I am feeling better after every stage and my morale is quite high."
Although some described stage 6 as a failure for Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma after Tadej Pogacar took the victory, it was the Dane who moved into Yellow. Leaving the 2022 Tour de France winner in a positive position as the race enters it's second week.
"Had you told me before the Tour de France that I was going to be in the lead after seven stages, with a 25” gap on Pogacar, I almost wouldn’t have believed it," says Vingegaard. "I feel satisfied and happy that I am already in the yellow jersey. It’s always better to be at the front than behind. And the stages that suit me better are still to come…"
