Joxean Fernández Matxín, one of the main men behind the scenes at
UAE Team Emirates, reviewed what happened in the Pyrenean days of the 2023
Tour de France between his rider
Tadej Pogacar and his great rival
Jonas Vingegaard.
"I think it is the Dragon Khan (roller coaster) of cycling , one day you lose time and the next you gain time and morale. It is clear that losing time is not good, but the next day taking it and hitting it is good. You don't have to take anything for granted in the fifth or sixth stage".
Regarding what happened in both stages, in which Vingegaard was better in one and Pogacar in another, Matxín does not look for complex explanations and explains that simply one rider was better one day and the other the next day:
"Vingegaard was stronger than Tadej, that is the explanation and the next day they ran to the attack, we tried to follow the right wheel, there was control of the race, we had three riders behind. We are going to go day by day, tomorrow is another difficult day, the whole route is complicated, tomorrow we will think about the past".
