"The last 300 meters are very demanding" - Daniel Martínez looking to take back time in Itzulia after losing time due to broken wheel

Daniel Martinez showed a great level of form in the opening stage of the Itzulia, being able to win a sprint for bonuses over Jonas Vingegaard. However, in the second stage he lost half a minute after touching a rival and puncturing.

"At the end, at the key point, I brushed against one and I broke the wheel, there was no time to get back to the peloton, we lost 30 seconds, it's unfortunate," he said in a post-race interview. The downhill finale made it impossible for the Colombian to get back, but instead being forced to limit the losses, a disappointment for the INEOS Grenadiers leader.

On the third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country he is clear that it is important for the overall and that the last meters will be key to try to win: "The sensations are good, the 2 days I've been pretty good, today is a decisive stage so we'll be there."

The stage will see several very steep ascents towards the end, including a hilltop finish which has it's maximum gradient at over 20%. "It's a very explosive finish, you have to measure your strength very well because the last 300 meters are very demanding, so let's see how it goes," he concluded.
