Exhausted after the final sprint up a kilometer, Primoz Roglic was very satisfied after the stage victory at the start of the Volta a Catalunya. The Slovenian, phenomenally launched by his Jumbo-Visma teammates, started the sprint early, but was able to hold on in the lead and take the victory against a great Remco Evenepoel who was about to overcome him.
"I feel sensational, it's crazy, there are a lot of people, a lot of fans, enjoying a lot," Roglic said in a post-race interivew. "The guys did a great job and I had my legs at the end. Of course I want to win the Volta, but it's only the first day, but they're going to come six very hard days ahead".
It was an incredibly tense finale in the Catalan race, as the GC riders anticipated the hilly final kilometers. A mass crash proved the fight for positioning was necessary, but the Tirreno-Adriatico winner was towards the front. Jumbo was among the teams making it very hard for the sprinters to have their best legs towards the final drag to the line, and they have succeeded. Roglic launched his sprint early, but had the best legs.
Remco Evenepoel came quite close to taking it from the Slovenian, but Roglic took advantage of his explosivity to win the opening day of the race. After winning three stages and the overall classification at the Italian stage-race, he takes yet another triumph here. He starts stage 2 to Vallter 2000 - a serious summit finish - already in the leader's jersey.
