It was a chaotic finale at the Tour de Suisse on the opening stage as the GC riders entered a direct battle in the final kilometers, however the win came from a small group sprint in which Stephen Williams surprised to take the stage win.
The breakaway went early on in the day as Chad Haga (Human Powered Health), Lewis Askey (Groupama - FDJ), Quinn Simmons (Trek - Segafredo), Johan Jacobs (Movistar Team), Casper Pedersen (Team DSM), Jay Vine (Alpecin - Fenix) and Simon Vitzthum (Swiss National Team).
It was no threat to the stage as several teams looked to chase throughout the day, with the final survivor of the front group Vitzthum resisted until the bottom of the final ascent. The pace was calm at first, but quickly accelerated as Jakob Fuglsang launched a move in the late slopes, having Remco Evenepoel and Adam Yates jumping across, eventually causing very small groups to go over the summit.
As the roads flattened the group grew in size, however with casualties as some of the main favourites such as Daniel Martínez and Gino Mäder were dropped. Several moves came in the front group with Evenepoel and Vlasov attacking in the final two kilometers, however a small group sprint came to reality.
As a Bahrain - Victorious rider crossed the line in celebration, many were left wondering who it had been. But Stephen Williams, 26 years of age, took his third professional win beating Max Schachmann and Andreas Kron at the finish line.
