Jumbo-Visma came into the Critérium du Dauphiné with the goal of taking the overall win, and they left the race today unchallenged. After working for his teammates throughout the week, today
Jonas Vingegaard managed to raise his arms in glory and win atop the Plateau de Solaison.
The Dutch team controlled the stage all day long with the specific plan in mind which was to attack and take the stage win in the hard Alpine ascent. Steven Kruijswijk set it up on the final climb and with 5.4 kilometers to go Jonas Vingegaard made his own move, dropping everyone in the field besides Ben O'Connor.
“It was quite incredible. We had the plan I should attack and Roglič should follow and we wanted to see if we could drop everyone," he said. With the duo distanced and the Slovenian having cemented the overall win, Vingegaard was given the stage win as a reward for a hard week of work. The Danish could perhaps drop his teammate, but the collaboration between the two was perfect, and a perfect final chapter before the start of the Tour de France for Jumbo-Visma.
"We succeeded and we can be very happy and proud," he said, as he went on to finish second in the overall classification.
The next stop is the Tour de France where Vingegaard will experience the Grand Depart in his home country, but he admits the same posture from Jumbo-Visma will be much harder to replicate in France: "It would be hard for us to be one-two in the Tour, Pogačar is there, Martinez and Vlasov, there are a lot more GC contenders.
"The competition will be harder and it will be harder to win – but we go for at least one of us to win the race," he concluded.
