Jumbo-Visma took their responsibilities in the final day, working all day long to capture the early break of the day, and in the final climb decimated the competition. Jonas Vingegaard won the final stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné and Primoz Roglic crossed the line with him to seal the GC win.
With the uphill start to the stage a lot of riders took the opportunity to attack the race. A large group of 15 riders went up the road, later on splitting in the Col de la Colombière where Laurens de Plus and Eddie Dunbar (INEOS Grenadiers), Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ), Jan Hirt (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) and Kenny Elissonde went clear.
The group went into the final climb with a gap of just over a minute as Jumbo-Visma controlled the breakaway all day long, as they had the clear desire of going for the stage win. As soon as the riders hit the harsh gradients of the Plateau de Solaison the front group split, with Jan Hirt and later George Bennett going clear, however being chased down by the pace of Steven Kruijswijk in the peloton.
The Dutchman destroyed the peloton, leaving only a few riders with Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic who attacked with over five kilometers to go halfway up the climb. The duo easily distanced their rivals, and worked together up to the finish line.
They extended their gap, and calmly rode over the finish line in a celebration style that is unfamiliar to most teams. Ben O'Connor confirmed his high form to finish third, finishing also his podium spot.
