Maxim Van Gils didn't go far from being the revelation of this spring, with podiums finishes at both; Strade Bianche and La Fleche Wallonne. Despite his schedule being filled with very challenging one-day races, the 24-year-old's spring block is not over. Just yet. There is Eschborn-Frankfurt left for the rising Lotto-Dstny star before he can enjoy his well-deserved rest.
"It was a very positive spring. I was very consistent and actually rode well in every race. I am very satisfied with it," he briefly reflects at WielerFlits microphone. "However, there is still progress to be made for me. I will still improve by competing in races at a higher level. That may not be something that will happen right away, but you will see it in the coming years. At least, that's what I think."
Van Gils won't settle down with just podiums in classics. No, he wants to land a big win. However it won't be easy with phenomenal riders such as Tadej Pogacar around. "It is a big problem, especially with Tadej in the Ardennes. He is extremely good. But maybe he won't ride one day and will opt for another program. Then there is an opportunity for me."
"After Liege I rested quite a bit. I now feel fresh again. Eschborn-Frankfurt is the last race in this block. Then it's over. I will rest for a while and go out of competition. Then I will prepare again and return again in the Tour de Suisse. This will be followed by the first goal of the summer - Tour de France."
Is start at the Olympic Games and World Championships in the back of Van Gils' mind? "The Olympics will be difficult. Only four riders are allowed there. There will be a great World Championships in Zurich at the end of the year. That course should suit me and I hope to be there. Have I already spoken to the national coach? We always chat a bit, so yeah."
