Whilst Josef Cerny may not have been at the top of most people's pre-stage favourites for the opening prologue at the Tour de Romandie, the Soudal - Quick-Step rider himself was always quietly confident.
“I rode a strong prologue, but it was very close with three men within a second,” the three-time former Czech Republic national time-trial champion said in his post-stage interview. “Today, however, I was the lucky one and I am very happy with that.”
With world time-trial champion Tobias Foss and Cerny's Soudal - Quick-Step teammate Remi Cavagna both within a second of the Czech's stage-winning time of 7.25, Cerny would have had a nervous ending to the stage whilst sitting in the hot seat. Prior to the stage however, he was confident that he could contest for the win.
“I work hard, so I wasn't surprised by my performance. There are good time trialists at the start here. I wasn't the top favourite either," Cerny says. "I was very confident. Before the start I already thought about a top 10 or top 5 place, but winning here now is absolutely amazing. A sprint tomorrow will be difficult, but I think I should be able to survive it. After that we will see.”
