After finishing 12th in last year’s
Amstel Gold Race, Romain
Grégoire delivered an even stronger performance in 2025, claiming an impressive
seventh place in a race defined by relentless pace and a dramatic finale.
The victory went to Mattias Skjelmose, who pulled off a
major upset by outsprinting both Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel in a
thrilling three-man dash to the line. But Grégoire, riding for Groupama – FDJ,
showed grit and class to hang tough in the chasing group and secure a top-10
finish.
Speaking in a team press release, Grégoire reflected on a
demanding day, "It was a pretty crazy race. I think we weren't expecting
such a fast pace from the start. We were all really on the limit when we got to
the final, and it exploded quickly. I was flat out when they went out, I
couldn't go. I rode the race I had to. I have no regrets."
While the front trio proved untouchable on the day, the
Frenchman was proud of his effort to stay in contention, "Everyone had
their place, and the three in front were a class above. I fought on every hill
to stay with this group and go for the top 5 at the finish."
He also assessed his sprint in the final metres, "I had
a decent sprint. I could have launched a little earlier to have more space, but
after 250 kilometers that fast, everyone is in their place. We'll be happy with
that. A top 10 at this level is not so bad."
