Vingegaard wins stage 6 - catalunya 2026
Jonas Vingegaard tightened his grip on the Volta a Catalunya with a decisive solo victory on Stage 6, attacking on the final climb to Queralt to distance all of his rivals and take a major step towards overall success.
The Dane made his move inside the final kilometres after a prolonged selection driven by Remco Evenepoel had reduced the race to a five-man group at the front, before powering clear to seal the stage win.

Vingegaard attacks and goes clear on final climb

The defining moment of the stage came when Vingegaard accelerated sharply on the climb, immediately opening a gap that no one could follow. Evenepoel could only allow the move to go, while Florian Lipowitz and Lenny Martinez attempted to respond but were unable to match the acceleration and were quickly distanced.
From that point, Vingegaard rode alone to the finish, putting the stamp on both the stage and his control of the general classification. Behind, Martinez and Lipowitz battled for the remaining podium places on the stage after being dropped by the winning move.

Evenepoel sets race up before decisive moment

Earlier in the stage, Evenepoel had been the rider to shape the outcome, driving a sustained pace that reduced the race to a select group of five riders.
That effort brought the general classification contenders to the front and neutralised the earlier breakaway, setting the stage for the final showdown on the climb to Queralt.
Before the decisive attack, Lenny Martinez had taken three bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, with Vingegaard and Evenepoel collecting two and one seconds respectively. Those gains added further nuance to the battle for the minor placings on the overall classification.
Behind the leading group, the race had already fragmented significantly. Marc Soler, Giulio Ciccone, Mattias Skjelmose and Felix Gall were unable to follow the decisive selection and finished well adrift, while further back, gaps extended to several minutes among the remaining contenders.

Breakaway neutralised as race turned on Pradell

The stage had initially been shaped by a large breakaway, but that scenario was dismantled on the Coll de Pradell. The steep gradients reduced the leading group before the pace set behind brought the GC riders back into contention and ultimately defined the outcome of the stage.
Giulio Ciccone’s attacking display throughout the stage did not translate into a result at the finish, but his efforts were recognised with the combativity award after repeatedly animating the race from the breakaway.

Vingegaard strengthens hold on overall lead

With the stage victory and further time gained on his rivals, Vingegaard now moves into a commanding position in the general classification heading into the final stage in Barcelona. Barring any late surprises, the Dane has placed himself on the verge of overall victory after a week that shifted decisively in his favour on the summit finishes.
