A tense moment unfolded during stage 4 of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali 2026. Team Visma | Lease a Bike were the victims of a serious incident that endangered the safety of their staff.
The events took place in Valdobbiadene, mid-stage in the Veneto region, when two intoxicated fans sparked a scene the team itself described as alarming.
According to the Dutch squad, one of the individuals even climbed onto the team car of the sports director, attempting to steal a bike from the roof rack. Meanwhile, the second man displayed an “extremely aggressive” attitude toward those inside the vehicle.
Swift action prevented the situation from escalating, though the scare was considerable for the team members on the scene. You can watch the video below:
Team manager Richard Plugge conveyed the team’s concern after the incident: “We take this incident very seriously, as it puts the safety of our colleagues at risk.”
He also outlined the immediate response: “Our staff on site went straight to the police and also reported the incident to the organisers.”

No damage, but high tension

Despite the gravity of the situation, the attempted theft was unsuccessful and no material damage was recorded. The emotional impact, however, was clear among those involved:
“In the end, they didn’t manage to steal any equipment and there was no damage. The colleagues in the car are fine, but understandably very shaken.”
Team Visma | Lease a Bike are contesting this Italian race with a blend of WorldTour riders and young talents from their development structure, across a five-day event in the north of the country.
The episode again puts the spotlight on safety in cycling, even beyond the race itself. Similar incidents have occurred in recent years, both on the road and in cyclocross. The presence of intoxicated spectators cannot be tolerated in a sport so open to the public. Measures must be strengthened to prevent more serious consequences.
