Stage 7 of the
Giro d'Italia culminated in the climb to Blockhaus, and it delivered a lot of action. The main favourite on the day
Jonas Vingegaard took the stage win, dropping the entire competition; whilst
Afonso Eulálio survived the day in the pink jersey.
The stage had a surprise presence in the breakaway as Jonathan Milan attacked early in the 245-kilometer long stage and went on to capture 12 points for the maglia ciclamino competition. He was joined by KOM leader Diego Pablo Sevilla, Nickolas Zukowski, Jardi Christian van der Lee and Tim Naberman.
A modest breakaway, one of four as Milan dropped back shortly after the intermediate sprint. Sevilla accumulated more points for the blue jersey, but this lead would later on be jeopardized by Jonas Vingegaard.
The gap was stable throughout most of the day, but began coming down dramatically as the riders approached the final 13-kilometer long climb.
Team Visma | Lease a Bike then took control of the stage, looking to set up an attack.
Jonas Vingegaard attacks Blockhaus
The writing was on the wall, with
Davide Piganzoli and Sepp Kuss providing a perfect launchpad for the Dane. The group was thinned down to around a dozen rider before Vingegaard attacked with 7 kilometers to go. Right before, the last survivors of the front group had been caught; whilst the likes of Egan Bernal and Enric Mas were struggling.
Afonso Eulálio would be dropped right before the attack, one which only Giulio Pellizzari was able to follow, whilst Felix Gall was close behind. Pellizzari went above what he could however, and with just over 5 kilometers to go the Italian completely cracked; not being able to follow the Austrian Gall afterwards.
The gap between the front two did not expand throughout the last kilometers and remained rather stable. Vingegaard rode to the stage win with only a little over 10 seconds over Felix Gall. Jai Hindley finished third in the stage, being the fastest in a sprint against Pellizzari himself and also Ben O'Connor who surprised on the final ascent.
Eulálio crossed the finish around 3 minutes behind, losing half of his lead to the Dane, but maintaining his pink jersey.
