The 2026 season has officially begun today in Australia with the
national championships. In the time trial event we have seen
Jay Vine take his first victory of the year for UAE Team Emirates - XRG whilst Feclity Wilson-Haffenden took the win in the women's event.
The 38-kilometer long time trial in Perth saw the usual suspects take to the start however there was a big difference this year from when in comparison to the last. Whilst Luke Plapp put in a massive performance in 2025, today he was nowhere within the first places and settled for a very distant eighth place.
Jay Vine managed to take advantage of this and took the victory.
The silver medalist at the World Championships seemed to be the strongest contender to take the win, and he got the job done. The second place on the road was a surprise in the form of Oliver Bleddyn, part of the Australian Team Brennan. Kelland O'Brien was third 40 seconds back on Vine whilst Ben O'Connor also showed solid form in his season opener with a fourth place.
Jay Vine took the win in the men's event and will wear the Australian national champion's jersey
Surprise in women's race
There was a big surprise in the women's race where Brodie Chapman was the main favourite. The UAE Team ADQ rider put in a strong ride, but not the fastest of the day, as she had to settle for second place behind Lidl-Trek's Felicity Wilson-Haffenden who is only 20 years old. The winning gap was of 20 seconds whilst Josie Talbot of Liv AlUla Jayco was third to complete the podium.
